Cooktop Technology

Have you ever heard of a downdraft stove or cooktop?

Well, I hadn’t until I installed one in my property a couple of years ago. A die hard gas user when it came to cooking it was time to enter the land of cooking discovery with induction technology and a downdraft feature.

Not an easy feat getting a "Wog in Clogs" off the gas.

So what is it?

It is a stove /cooktop that has a fan that sucks the fumes and smoke down through a pipe under the floor or wall instead of having a hood that captures all the smoke, fumes, grease and fat from above. Downdraft cooktops do not have the extractor fan or cooking hood above the stovetop, instead the downdraft fan sucks the smoke, steam, or fumes down through a tube out through a vent

The reason I love my downdraft cooktop is that it is quite compact and very stylish with a elegant minimal effect. It is also convenient not having to deal with an overhead pull out hood or exhaust that you bump your head on continually is also a benefit. Another advantage is you can easily use it in an island unit or another unusual position, as you are not dictated by installation provisions to accomodate the hood.

Cleaning is a breeze with the removal of the vent and basket that can be placed in the dishwasher to remove the unwanted grease and fats that build up. I don’t know about you? But the overhead extractors are a punish to remove and clean. With the exhaust and extraction system built in there is not need for extra work on the installation and a real plus is you are only buying the one appliance to install, not like the counter part. This option can be cost effective, aesthetically appealing, low maintenance, and quiet. The perfect partner one might say?

Ideally, this genius appliance should be considered at concept stage of planning your dream kitchen. One con is if you were to retrofit it into an existing project it may add up in costs to varying factors of requiring access, as the vent needs to be plumbed outside a wall or floor.

So, if you are looking for the ultimate cooking experience in your new project consider the downdraft technology to omit the unsightly range hood.
